Best Calorie + Workout App for iPhone (2026)

Most people who count calories also train. Yet most calorie apps treat exercise as an afterthought: an "add exercise" button that estimates calories burned and moves on. Most workout apps, in turn, ignore what you eat.

If you want food and training handled in one place, the shortlist is shorter than the App Store suggests.

What "doing both" should mean

  • Food logging fast enough to keep up with: photo or barcode scanning, a searchable database, macros, adjustable servings.
  • An actual training plan: workouts matched to your goal and equipment, set-by-set logging and a way to progress, not just a video library.
  • Some link between the two. At minimum, your targets should follow from your goal. Ideally, the app notices things like low protein on a day you trained.

The options

WellFit

WellFit (disclosure: this is our app) puts a food log and a training program in one iPhone app. You log meals with a photo, a barcode (Open Food Facts, with USDA as a fallback) or a USDA food search, and your calorie and macro targets come from your profile. The training program is built from your goal, equipment and activity level, and you log each set as you go. Daily coaching tips look at food and training together, for example when protein is low after a workout.

Health data is stored on your iPhone, with no account and no ads. Photo scans are sent to Google Gemini for recognition when you're online. The app is available in 12 languages. The free plan includes food logging, the training program and 3 AI photo scans a day. Pro costs $29.99 a year or $3.99 a month in the US, with a 14-day free trial, and raises the limit to 30 scans a day.

Best for: food and training in one app, without paying for two subscriptions.

MacroFactor + MacroFactor Workouts

MacroFactor is known for adaptive nutrition coaching: it adjusts your calorie and macro targets from your weight trend and what you actually eat. Training lives in a separate app, MacroFactor Workouts, launched in January 2026, which builds routines around your goals, level and equipment and progresses them automatically. MacroFactor Workouts costs $71.99 a year on its own; a bundle of both apps costs $89.99 a year after the first year.

Best for: adaptive nutrition coaching, if you don't mind using two apps.

Trainera

Trainera tracks workouts (sets, reps, personal records) and nutrition (macros, AI food-photo logging, water) in the same app, with an AI assistant that builds and edits workout and nutrition plans. You can also add a human trainer. There's a free plan with food logging, barcode scanning and AI photo logging, and an Apple Watch app.

Best for: an AI assistant, or the option of working with a real coach.

Ellim

Ellim is a workout tracker first, with 3,500+ exercises, custom routines and ready-made programs, and it includes nutrition tracking with food search and barcode scanning on the free tier. Premium ($99.99 a year) adds AI workout generation, multi-day AI programs and AI meal detection from photos.

Best for: lifters who want a big exercise library, with nutrition on the side.

MyFitnessPal

The largest food database of the group, with more than 20 million items. The free plan covers basic food and exercise logging. Barcode scanning, Meal Scan (photo logging) and voice logging need Premium, which costs $79.99 a year. Its training features are basic next to a dedicated workout app.

Best for: database coverage, if you're happy to pay for Premium.

Cronometer

Built for detailed nutrition tracking, including vitamins and minerals, rather than training.

Best for: tracking specific micronutrients.
